Attention, Geneva residents and commuters!

Prepare for a significant change in your travel routines as the Route 31 underpass will be temporarily closed starting this Monday. This closure marks a critical phase in the ongoing development of Union Pacific’s ambitious Third Main Line project, aimed at enhancing our local railway infrastructure.

Since its inception in 2022, this project has promised to bolster our city’s connectivity and streamline train traffic by adding a third line adjacent to the existing Union Pacific-West tracks, extending from Peck Road in Geneva to West Chicago. This spring’s focus will pivot to essential pavement modifications and the erection of a new train bridge, vital steps toward the project’s completion.

While we all look forward to the improvements this project promises, the upcoming four-month closure will require patience and planning. The underpass is scheduled to reopen on June 24, contingent on favorable weather conditions. We appreciate your understanding and flexibility during this period.

This isn’t the first phase of the project; last summer, construction teams laid the groundwork by constructing abutments, wing walls, and additional support structures. These foundational efforts set the stage for the current developments and the enhanced safety and efficiency they promise to bring to our community.

In addition to the underpass closure, please be advised that two grade crossings, Third Street and Western Avenue, will also undergo temporary closures later this year. These will be scheduled sequentially to minimize disruption, ensuring that only one crossing is affected at a time.

We understand that these closures may impact your daily routines, and we’re here to help you navigate these changes. Stay tuned to GenevaDailyNews for real-time updates, detour routes, and tips to ease your commute during this time.

The full completion of the Third Main Line project is anticipated by late 2024. We look forward to witnessing the positive impacts this development will bring to Geneva, enhancing our infrastructure and supporting our community’s growth.

Thank you for your patience and cooperation as we continue to improve Geneva’s transportation landscape. Your understanding during this construction period is greatly appreciated, as we all look forward to a more connected and efficient future.
